Short answer

Contabo’s “unlimited” bandwidth is a three-layer story — not a blank check to saturate the port forever:

Transfer policy

Contabo publishes no default GB/TB quota and no per-GB overage bill on VPS, VDS, and Dedicated Servers. Marketing and the VPS product page say every Cloud VPS includes unlimited inbound and outbound data transfer, with fair-usage policies applying.

Port cap

Each Cloud VPS model still has a fixed port speed (200 Mbit/s on Cloud VPS 4 up to 1 Gbit/s on Cloud VPS 16/18). That is the hard ceiling on how fast you can push or pull, regardless of “unlimited” transfer.

Throttle discretion

Contabo’s fair-usage policy says traffic must align with typical server workloads. If usage is exceptionally high or disruptive, Contabo may throttle at its discretion. Contabo describes those measures as rare, says it emails first, and works with you on a solution. Contabo does not publish a numeric GB threshold for “exceptional.”

So: unlimited transfer ≠ uncapped port ≠ zero fair-use risk.

What Contabo publishes today

Paraphrased from Contabo’s help article and Cloud VPS product page (as-of 2026-11-06 Asia/Shanghai — re-check the live URLs if you are buying later):

Help article (fair usage)

  • There is no default bandwidth limit on Contabo servers (VPS, VDS, Dedicated).
  • Only the fair usage policy applies: traffic should match typical server workloads; Contabo may throttle exceptionally high or disruptive use; such measures are described as rare and meant to preserve fair access for everyone.
  • Port speeds by product family: VPS and VDS typically 100 Mbps–1 Gbps; most Dedicated Servers 100 Mbps, with select high-end models at 1 Gbps.
  • VDS customers who need consistently higher throughput can upgrade to an unrestricted data transfer package (250 / 500 / 750 Mbit/s or 1 Gbps). Contabo notes that additional bandwidth packages are not available for Dedicated Servers.
  • If usage exceeds fair usage, Contabo says it will notify you by email and work on a suitable solution.
  • Contabo also publishes tips on monitoring outgoing traffic, restricting unnecessary traffic, optimizing applications, and keeping the server secure (high-level summary later; full steps live on the help page).

Cloud VPS product page (marketing + footnotes)

Contabo’s Core Cloud VPS page states that every Cloud VPS plan comes with unlimited inbound and outbound data transfer, with port speeds from 200 Mbit/s up to 1 Gbit/s, and that fair usage policies apply.

Footer-style legal on the same page (paraphrase):

  • Incoming traffic: unlimited and unmetered; no extra charges.
  • Outgoing traffic: unlimited — fair usage policy applies based on average server workloads; Contabo reserves the right to throttle servers with exceptionally high or disruptive usage patterns.

Fair-use in plain words

Contabo does not publish a public “you get X TB then we throttle” number on the help article or VPS page we re-fetched. HostStack will not invent one.

What Contabo does say, in plain language:

  • Use the network the way a normal server workload would.
  • Extremely high or disruptive patterns can trigger a throttle (Contabo’s discretion).
  • Contabo frames those throttles as rare.
  • Expect an email and a conversation about a solution — Contabo does not describe an automatic silent ban as the first step in that help article.

“Unlimited” here means no published meter and no per-GB invoice line for ordinary Cloud VPS traffic — not “run the port flat 24/7 with contractual immunity.”

Who this model fits (and who should look elsewhere)

Often a fit when:

  • You want lots of RAM/disk per euro and traffic that looks like a typical web app, CMS, staging box, email/file server, or light SaaS backend (Contabo’s own Core VPS positioning).
  • You can live with a plan port ceiling (e.g. 200 Mbit/s on Cloud VPS 4).
  • You prefer no surprise per-GB overage over a hyperscaler-style transfer pool.

Look at metered DigitalOcean (or another host) instead when:

  • You need a clear included-GiB pool and a published overage price you can model in a spreadsheet.
  • Your workload is expected to push sustained high egress near the port for long stretches (CDN-scale media, continuous bulk sync, heavy public download mirrors) — Contabo’s fair-use language exists for a reason; we do not invent a safe TB number.
  • You want DO-style docs/UX and tear-down billing first → DigitalOcean provider.

Abuse, spam, or mail-blast use cases are out of scope for this guide — read Contabo’s ToS; HostStack does not give bypass advice.

Neither model is universally “cheaper.” Contabo wins when fair-use + port are acceptable and you avoid exceptional egress. DO wins when you want predictable included GiB and a known overage rate. Monitoring tips Contabo lists (high-level)

Contabo’s help article warns that if average bandwidth usage exceeds fair usage, port speed might be throttled — and suggests reducing outgoing traffic in advance. At a high level, Contabo points to:

  1. Monitor outgoing traffic — see which processes consume bandwidth (Windows Task Manager / Resource Monitor; Linux tools such as NetHogs).
  2. Restrict unnecessary traffic — tighten firewall outbound rules so only needed services talk out.
  3. Optimize applications — e.g. CDN for heavy static assets, internal backup space instead of external transfer where Contabo offers it, caching.
  4. Keep the server secure — unusual high egress can mean compromise; monitor, scan, reinstall from clean backups if needed.

FAQ

Will Contabo ban me for using bandwidth?
Contabo’s bandwidth help article talks about email notification and working on a solution when fair usage is exceeded, and about possible throttling for exceptional/disruptive use. It does not frame “ban for normal traffic” as the default first step. Account actions for ToS/abuse are a separate topic — read Contabo’s terms; HostStack does not invent enforcement SLAs.

Is “unlimited” a lie?
Not in the sense Contabo markets it: no default GB cap and no per-GB bill on the Cloud VPS story, plus unlimited inbound/outbound marketing with fair-usage. It is incomplete if you hear only the marketing word and skip the port cap and throttle discretion. Read both.

What if I stream or push data 24/7?
Sustained high egress can look like the “exceptionally high or disruptive” pattern Contabo reserves the right to throttle. Contabo does not publish a numeric safe threshold. If your product needs predictable multi-TB egress every month, model DigitalOcean’s included transfer + $0.01/GiB overage (or another metered host) before you buy Contabo on transfer alone.

Can I buy more bandwidth on a Dedicated Server?
Contabo’s help article says additional bandwidth packages are not available for Dedicated Servers. VDS customers can upgrade to unrestricted data transfer packages (250/500/750 Mbit/s or 1 Gbps). Verify on Contabo before you order.
